The film that started it all – Wheels Across a Wilderness with Mal Leyland

In 1966, two brothers, and a bunch of their mates, decided it would be fun to travel across the Simpson Desert in 4WDs, and film their travels – something that had never been done before.

These two brothers were of course Mal and Mike Leyland, and the result was the film Wheels Across a Wilderness.

As part of the 4WD and Adventure Shows’ new movie night, the one and only Mal Leyland will be presenting the film Wheels Across a Wilderness, so make sure you stick around after the Show on the Friday to see the film!

Wheels Across a Wilderness was 18 months in the planning and took five months to complete. Driving two Land Rovers from Steep Point, Western Australia, Mike and Mal headed across the centre of the continent to Cape Byron, New South Wales.

Five young Australians setting out on an expedition never made before: a journey across a waterless continent. What followed was a series of mishaps, but also spectacular achievements, as they saw and filmed outback Australia that had never been seen before.

We are thrilled that the legendary Mal Leyland is our special guest at the 4WD and Adventure Shows this year, and that he and his wife Laraine will be on hand to introduce the film at our special movie night.

Wheels Across a Wilderness will be screened at the 4WD and Adventure Show on Friday 13th October from 6pm at the Engel Bush Camp Stage area. Bring the family, there will be food and drinks on sale; and the 4WD Clubs will be collecting donations for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Entry to the movie night is included in your Show ticket, but is only for the Friday of the Show weekend. Get your tickets online here!
